The innovirInstitute, an independent organization in Johannesburg, brings a unique mix of energy, experience and talent to achieving the goal of good health for people infected and affected by HIV.

On December 1st, 2000 the Institute launched South Africa’s first comprehensive HIV care website.

H1N1 Influenza (“Swine Flu”) and HIV Infection

Because this is a new form of the Influenza virus, and the human immune system has not encountered this germ before, people are more susceptible to acquiring it. The part of the immune system that is most protective against Influenza virus does not directly involve CD4 (helper) cells. This means that people with HIV infection are not more at risk for getting the H1N1 virus.

For most people, the younger they look, the better they feel about themselves. Many factors contribute to premature aging, particularly sun damage, smoking and loss of facial fat. Many of the antiretroviral medications used to effectively treat people with HIV infection cause faster and more severe loss of fat from many parts of the body. This side-effect is known as “lipoatrophy”.
